Missouri Western Tennis split the weekend, losing one match 5-2 at Oklahoma Baptist (2-2) and beating (2-3) Southeastern Oklahoma State 4-1.
Although the Griffons lost to the Bison, head coach Olaya Garrido-Rivas thinks that it was a winnable match.
“Well, I think that we could have won both this weekend,” Garrido-Rivas said. “We didn’t come out with the win, but they played hard enough and they deserved the win.”
The Griffons got two singles wins from freshman Nicole Donnely and also from sophomore Claudia Iglesias. Both these wins went into three sets, with Donnely scoring 10 in her third set. They also won one doubles set, represented by sophomore Mireia Birosta and freshman Ariella Curci.
Iglesias echoed the sentiments of Garrido-Rivas in her own words about this game.
“I think everyone played hard, and if one more doubles goes our way I think we have the momentum to win,” Iglesias said. “That one was a tough match to lose.”
Doubles No. 2 was a 6-4 loss for the team of Donnely and freshman Isabella MacGibbon.
The second match of the weekend was a 4-1 win against the Storm of Southeastern Oklahoma State.
The Griffons got the doubles point with wins at No. 1 (Ström/Iglesias) and No. 3 (Curci/Birosta) and earned singles wins at No. 1 (Ström), No. 3 (MacGibbon) and No. 4 (Curci).
Saturday’s match against McKendree was cancelled, so Missouri Western's next match will be against 1-1 Southwest Baptist on Sunday, Feb. 23.
