Lacrosse 22

Madison Brady looks for a pass.

This year marks the first year of women’s lacrosse being a sport at Missouri Western.  With most expansion teams, come low expectations.  At any level, teams in their first year are known to struggle more than ones that have experience.

It’s really just common sense to an extent.  Teams in their first year have had no previous years to build up team chemistry and no knowledge of the opponents that they will be playing.  In a sense, it is like a team full of inexperienced true freshmen for the Griffons this semester.  Regardless of the previous experience, these girls have never played a single game together, they have never played an in-conference opponent, and they have known each other for under a year.

Due to the lack of teams in the MIAA, the Missouri Western women’s lacrosse team will be competing in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, more shortly known as the GLVC. Now with two scrimmage games in the bag, the Griffons set their sights on this coming Friday, February 26th, where they take on Culver-Stockton in the teams first-ever regular season game.

As far as the Griffon roster looks, they have some fire power.  Redshirt freshman goalkeeper and New York Native Mackenzie Porter previously played at the Division 1 level at Rutgers.  The Griffons have a very balanced roster that varies with D1 transfers, D2 transfers, JUCO transfers, and true freshman, the women’s lacrosse team is trying to start the program in exciting fashion.

The team has shown talent, as they defeated Ottawa University 21-7 on Friday afternoon, which concluded the teams exhibition schedule.  The Griffons now have a 13 game schedule in front of them, before the team hopes to qualify for the GLVC tournament, in which they will have a chance to claim their first ever conference championship in their first ever year of existence.  The team will play in seven games at home, at Spratt Stadium, and this will be the first time that Griffon Nation will have an opportunity to watch the newest Griffons to enter into the Missouri Western Athletics scene.  One of those games is the home opener in less than a week, where they look to siege a victory in the teams first ever game, against the aforementioned Culver-Stockton.  The game, weather permitting, will be located at Spratt Stadium, starting at 6 p.m., marking the start of a four game home streak to start Missouri Western women’s lacrosse teams first season.
