This week, President Matthew Wilson discussed the status of Friday classes, the new Griffon Guarantee scholarship and the ‘presidential limo’.

Do we get Fridays off now?

Some students might have noticed a lack of Friday classes available during spring registration. According to Wilson, an announcement about the status of Friday classes is forthcoming in the next few weeks.

“We needed to model the classrooms to make sure that it would work,” Wilson said. “The modeling was just barely done this week, and it was very positive.”

What is the Griffon Guarantee Scholarship?

The Griffon Guarantee Scholarship is a new program that will automatically fund incoming full-time students, including transfer students. The initial reward ranges from $500 of $6500 depending on academic merit. This scholarship will replace existing automatic merit-based scholarships, such as the President’s scholarship and the A+ scholarship. According to Wilson, this change was made to simplify the financial aid process for incoming students.

“Before, we had all these different types of scholarships and people would stack,” Wilson said. “You could have a student come in, let’s say that they would get the Presidential scholarship, they would get an A+ scholarship and another scholarship, you’re looking at like four different scholarships. What we’ve done is really simplified the process.”

One key aspect of this program is a regular increase in funding every academic year. Students who meet the hour completion requirements, maintain a good academic standing—2.0 GPA—and remain at full-time status will have their scholarship automatically renew and grow. However, students receiving this scholarship could end up with less funding than students awarded the old scholarships due to a lack of stacking. According to Wilson, this change will not impact current students.

“The folks that already have their scholarships have kept their scholarships, nothing changes,” Wilson said. “That was what we offered them when they came in, and it would just be a complete mess if we went and said, ‘Hey, we’re changing your scholarships.’”

Current students will be grandfathered into their existing scholarships. For more information about the program, visit

What is the ‘presidential limo’?

Significantly shorter and without a partition, Wilson has spent several afternoons in his ‘presidential limo’—a borrowed admissions golf cart—driving students from class to class. Wilson recently received an upgrade in the form of a designated cart donated by local industry leaders. Wilson said that the gift from ProServ, E L Crawford Construction, Gray Manufacturing and Sunshine Electronic was a great present for the Missouri Western students.

“It’s unbelievable to me that we had several donors who were inspired by the ‘presidential limo’ actually go out and get one,” Wilson said. “Companies stepped up and went, ‘You know, we care about Missouri Western and we care about the students.”

Wilson said that students should keep an eye out for the cart between classes in the near future.
