The Griffon tennis team fought gusty winds on Saturday afternoon as they battled Lincoln University in MIAA match play. Western won its second straight match and third out of their last four after defeating the Lincoln Tigers 9-0, improving their record to 6-13 and 2-8 in MIAA play with the victory.

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-17457" alt="Denise Chiao and Meara Smith play a double against tow other players. Joyce Stevenson | Staff Photographer

“The wind today wasn’t steady and it was gusting so you feel like you have a handle on your shots with the wind but its hard to manage and be consistent,” Griffon Women’s Tennis Coach Ron Selkirk said. “I was glad the girls weren’t too cautious and just let the game flow, learning how to manage the elements. It’s just the matter of being patient.”

The match started off with doubles action and the Griffons soared, getting three points with No. 1 Meara Smith and Denise Chiao getting an 8-3 victory.
No. 2 Kayla Dysart and Alyssa Dougan paired up to defeat Kamaria Braye and Ashley Rolling 8-1.

“Everybody is figuring it out and hitting their stride,” sophomore Kayla Dysart said.

Ceara Boldridge and Jody Goers defeated Gabrielle Quine and Jasmine Daniel 8-4 in the No. 3 doubles.

“I think we started off slow but once we got into the groove we started to play better,” freshman Jody Goers said. “The wind was really affecting the balls we were hitting but when we are on our game and believe in ourselves, I feel like we can play with any of the other schools.”

With singles action, the Griffons’ Denise Chiao made quick of her opponent, defeating Gober 6-1, 6-0.

“In doubles, I felt like me and Meara gelled pretty well,” freshman Denise Chiao said. ”I had to really adjust to wind starting off. I feel like our whole entire team is getting mentally tough and positive in every match. “
In No. 2 singles, Kayla Dysart defeated Braye 6-2, 6-0.

“The wind definintly wasn’t a fun thing to play with but soon as I settled down, I felt like I played pretty well,” sophomore Kayla Dysart said.

Meara Smith pulled out a win against Katrevich in No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-2 and Boldridge rolled over Roling 6-1, 6-1. Lindsay Beger won over Quinn 6-4, 6-2 and Alyssa Dougan started off slow but finished her match in a fury over Daniel 6-4, 6-0.
With this win, the Griffons dropped the Tigers to 1-8 overall and 0-8 MIAA match play.

“Coming in today, I feel like we’ve definetly been playing better and playing with confidence,” Selkirk said.

The Griffons’ next matchup is against the William Jewell Cardinals in St. Joseph, Mo. Match play is set to start at 2:00 pm.

Missouri Western tennis showed promising signs in their hard fought battle against Evangel University, but fell 5-4 in their non-conference matchup on their home court at the St. Joseph Tennis and Swim Club. With this loss, the Griffons fall to 3-11 (0-6 MIAA) on the year and made it their 10 straight loss of the season.
Starting the day off slow, the Griffons pulled out one win from the doubles action by the pair Ceara Boldridge and Kelly Cochran, who defeated their opponents 8-4, but even after the win, the Griffons were still down 4-1 in match play.
In singles action, the Griffons hit a spark and won No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 but it was too late. The No. 3 matchup between Western’s Kayla Dysart and Evangel’s Ali Sivinski was a close one that made the one match difference between Western and Evangel as Dysart was defeated 6-4, 0-6 and 10-8. Dysart played great thoughout the entire match but just couldn’t get over the hump in the final set.
Boldridge won her match against Kelly Bush 6-2, 6-2 while Lindsay Beger defeated in a close matchup at the end. Phine Mulumba 6-2, 7-5 and Alyssa Dougan defeated Kailey Roland 6-1, 6-2.
The Griffons’ confidence has been growing throughout the entire season.
“This is one of my most talented teams I have had and you can sense that their confidence is growing,” Coach Ron Selkirk said. “They are playing matches now where they are saying ‘I can win this match.’”
Sophmore Ceara Boldridge came out of the day’s matchups undefeated.
“I came in today thinking we had a good chance coming in today and I knew it was going to be close,” Boldridge said. “I feel like we are still growing and my play has really improved from last season and today I was playing a lot more consistent, getting into a rhythm.”
Lindsay Beger left the match day 1-0.
“My stroke swing was starting to slow down as I got tired but at the end I was happy I ended up closing the match out at the end,” Beger said.
Western’s No. 1 Meara Smith fell in her singles match 6-0, 6-2 and No. 2 Denise Chiao was defeated 6-1, 6-0 in her match. “I was confident out there today but I just couldn’t get into a rhythm,” Smith said.
In doubles competition, Denis Chiao and Meara Smith fell 8-1 in their matchup while Dysart and Alyssa Dougan fell in their match 8-4.
The Griffons have one of the youngest rosters in the MIAA with seven of its 10 on the roster being freshmen.
The Griffons next matchup is on Wednesday, March 27 at 3 p.m. against Emporia State University. Western still has nine matches before MIAA Tournament play begins April 19-20.

Missouri Western Tennis team has started out the season with a solid 3-3 record.

This is a big improvement from last year, considering the fact the team only won three games total, with two of the three wins coming from conference-opponent Lincoln.

This year’s squad is fairly young, with the majority of the team being freshman and sophomores. Head coach Ron Selkirk feels that a lot of the girls this year are still getting used to playing in on a higher level than normal because of how young they are.

“I think most of these young girls have not played on the level of Division II college tennis,” Selkirk said. “Most of them are learning that it is truly a more stronger and consistent game than what they have found in their high school careers.”

Selkirk stated that he noticed the team was a lot better than he expected at the beginning of the season. The team has won some important close games, and as the competition gets tougher, he is starting to see constant growth from the girls.

This year’s team has not backed down from any of the teams that they have faced this season. Selkirk feels that even with the better teams that they have played, his team is putting in a strong effort each time they suit up to play.

“I do think that they have been overwhelmed sometimes by some of the stronger teams that we have came across,” Selkirk said. “But I also feel that when they walk off the court, they feel like they could have done better. Before you can be competitive in a situation, you have to go out and make it a close game to begin with.”

Selkirk also stated that as the girls grow and gain more experience, the more the team will develop into a strong contender. Experience seems to be what the team is lacking, but the will to win has been shown by all the girls including the freshman.

The team has a lot of players that have stepped up to the challenge, and have shown that they will continue to get better. Alecia Jenkins is the only senior on the team, but has played very well and has continued to show good leadership toward the team in her first year on varsity.

Sophomore Katie Fields has also had a fairly strong season thus far, and Selkirk hopes that her play will continue as the season progresses.

The mental part of the game is something that Selkirk said he has continued to teach to his players. Being able to compete and hustle for an entire match – no matter the score — is what he wants his girls to learn and show when they step on the court.

Missouri Western’s Tennis season is underway, and already things are looking up from last year.

The 2010 Tennis season is well behind coach Ron Selkirk and his team. The season is over; done; finished. 2011 has started and there could not be better news surrounding the tennis team.

Last year, finishing with a record of 0-7 in the conference and 3-15 overall, Western did not look anywhere near a team ready for the MIAA tournament. They drew the number one seed, Northwest Missouri, and was ousted 5-0.

In just the first week of competition of the 2011 season, Western has already won two games, just one less than the total of last season, and already looks more competitive. This is definitely something coach Selkirk can build on.

“We’re doing pretty good,” Selkirk said. “I would have liked to have been 4-0 but they’re things to build on.”

Western defeated Lincoln University last Friday, a team they lost to 8-1 a year ago. Not only did Western get payback against Lincoln, but they also took care of Morningside 7-2, a team that they defeated last year.

Senior Mindy Buschbom knows this is her last year and is ready for the rest of the season.

“I want to win more games,” Buschbom said. “For me personally I want to win more singles and doubles.”

Buschbom did not play on the team last year but will be looked at as a leader for her final season. She was not eligible to play last year becaue of credit hours. Being back on the team is great for Western because she is one of the better players.

“I like everyone; we all get along,” Buschbom said. “We are all like the same person. As for the coach, he is a great coach. He’s always getting us feed back on what to do.”

Western has a favorable schedule early on. They already defeated two of the four teams they played. Next is Johnson County Community College, a team that finished 4-11 in the regular season last year before making a run for the Region 6 title, taking second. They also play Emporia State, who finished 6th in the conference last season, and Baker University.

The schedule gets tougher in the middle of the year, as Western has to travel to Iowa to play Graceland University, go to Maryville to play last years regular season conference champions Northwest and also go to Topeka to play the defending conference tournament champions Washburn University.

“Playing the conference as a whole, it’s tough; there are some good teams so good competition,” Selkirk said.

Western has four freshman who were not part of last years dismal season. This includes Erin Ward, Sophia Robertson, Katherine Guinn and Katie Field. Continuing down the roster, Western has the only sophomore on the team, Nicole Kerr and junior Alecia Jenkins. Western has two seniors, the aforementioned Buschbom and Sarah Hatten, a public relations major who transferred to the team after attending the University of Oregon.

Last season, Selkirk talked great about how well Hatten played during her single’s matches. If she can continue donig that this season, she will help Western get more wins.

According to the MIAA website, the women’s tennis division did not have one team finish in the regional rankings last year. However, Selkirk thinks there is great competition for his team this year.

“We beat Lincoln so we’re already 1-0,” Selkirk said. “That is a good thing; getting the monkey off our back because we finally won a conference game.”

Look for Western to rebound from a poor 2010 season and gain great experience from a young team in 2011. With leadership from Buschbom and Hatten as well as quailty play from the two, Western is capable of upsetting some teams along the way and if they can do that the 2011 season will be much more enduring and easier to manage than the year before.

The Missouri Western women’s tennis team has been having a rough season so far and things didn’t get any better for the girls this past Wednesday. The Griffons fell 9-0 to Northwest Missouri State in St. Joseph on April 24.

“I think that you have to forget that they are as good as they are and just go out there and pretend that they are just another team,” Amber Adams said.

But Northwest was sure to remind the Griffons of who they were in the first match. Kayla Daughtrey was beaten by Sureena Weir 6-0, 6-0. That pace continued for the Griffons the entire day and it seemed that Northwest was not going to take them lightly. Senior Dominique Leone was not able to break through Northwest’s Lisa Pendrak as she also went down 6-0, 6-0.

Senior Dominique Leone returns a serve during a Griffon tennis match. Photo | Sara Baum

“She likes to hit about the same way I do and girls that hit like that I’m going to have a little trouble with,” Leone said of her opponent.

The rest of the Griffon team struggled as well. Nicole Kerr lost to Veronica Castilla 6-1, 6-0 and Alecia Jenkins lost to Brittany Browning 6-0, 6-1. Sarah Hatten was the last of the singles as she went down 6-1, 6-0.

“Sarah has come out and is close to a winning record in conference, so I have been impressed with her,” coach Ron Selkirk said.

The Griffons did not fare much better in doubles action, as seniors Amber Adams and Dominique Leone went down to Pendrak and Castilla 8-2. Daughtrey and Kerr lost to Weideman and Hoffman 8-1 and Hatten and Jenkins lost 8-0 to Weir and Browning.

However, not all has been bad for the Griffons this year as they seem to have grown closer as a team.

“We have grown a lot as a team,” Adams said. “Yeah, we may not have won many games on the court, but we’ve developed great relationships off the court.”

The Griffons fell to 1-13 and 0-7 in the conference and Northwest improved to 15-6 and 7-0 in the MIAA.

The Missouri Western tennis team took another loss on the season when they competed against the Washburn Lady Blues on Friday, April 9, placing them at 1-10 overall.
In the singles competition, Western fought hard for any win possible. Sarah Hatten pulled in the only win for the Griffons, defeating Lady Blue Kristin Mckee 6-3 and 10-8.

The rest of the Griffon squad wasn’t as successful on their home courts, as the rest of the singles players lost at least one game 6-0 against Washburn.

The doubles competition was much of the same story as the singles. Western went 0-3 against the talented Washburn squad. The team of Sarah Hatten and Alecia Jenkins were the closest match, as they played their opponents to an 8-4 set.

Junior Kayla Daughtery returns a serve during a Griffon tennis match last week. “The players from Washburn were really consistent with their strokes,” Junior Sarah Hatten said. “They played hard and brought a lot of intensity.”

Playing against Washburn, the top team in the conference, was a good opportunity for the Griffon team to see how they need to perform and what their chances of being a competitor in the MIAA tournament would be.

“They were consistent and at the end of the day they played through their weaker moments better than we did,” Freshman Nicole Kerr said.

Kerr played tough against her opponent Morgan Rainey, but unfortunately lost 6-2, 6-0. Regardless of the team loss on Friday, Kerr realizes that these games can be a learning experience for everyone.

“I think we are still very much a developing team and in a lot of ways we are still realizing exactly what we are capable of, and learning how to play to each others strengths,” Kerr said.

“Win or lose, we are learning things about ourselves as players and as a team.”

The Griffons only have four matches left to compete in, and are still looking to improve on mistakes they’ve learned from this past season.

“Our team can work on consistency and maintaining composure on the court,” Hatten said. “It’s important to represent not only yourself in a positive way, but also the university.”

Despite having a rough season, the girls have high hopes for the remainder of their 2010 year and still keep their competitive spirits. The MIAA tournament begins on April 24-25 in Kansas City, Mo. Western is hoping to be there.

The 1-6 Missouri Western tennis team hoped to end their four game losing streak, but couldn’t pull out the win as they faced the 4-3 Truman State Bulldogs on Tuesday, Mar. 30 in St. Joseph, Mo.

The sun was shining and the temperature was ideal as the Griffons battled to get a much needed win out of the match-up. An obstacle that contributed to the Griffons 8-1 loss, though, was the heavy winds.

Head coach Ron Selkirk knew that wind would be a factor for his team, but wasn’t about to use that as an excuse for the results of the matches.

“It’s been pretty windy, but it’s been windy on both sides of the court,” Selkirk said. “I thought our girls would adjust a little bit better.”

Taking away the wind factor, facing a team as good as Truman State was going to be no easy task due to Truman being one of the top teams in the conference.

Laura Kukuc receives a serve from a Truman player during Western’s match last week. No matter what Western threw at the Bulldogs, they always had an answer. Truman allowed only one win in the singles competition by Western junior Sarah Hatten as she defeated Kirstyn Sampias of Truman State 6-2 and 6-1.

“Sarah Hatten played extremely well and she’s playing well in her singles match-ups,” Selkirk said.

Hatten’s senior team mate Dominique Leone was proud that her fellow Griffon could pull out a win.

“She’s been a strong hold in the team,” Leone said.

For the rest of the team, however, a win wouldn’t be in sight for the Griffons. Sophomore Alecia Jenkins tried her best, but fell short in her match 6-1 and 6-0.

“I think they played really consistent, and I played inconsistent,” Jenkins said.

Western also fell to Lincoln University in Bolivar, Mo. on April 3. The team pulled out one win in the singles category by Junior Sarah Hatten and one win in the doubles category by Nicole Kerr and Kayla Daughtery.

The Griffons also played another conference match in Bolivar and lost to Southwest Baptist 0-9. Southwest Baptist is currently one of the top teams in the conference.

After these disappointing matches, the Griffons are now at 1-9 and 0-4 in the conference.

Their next matchup will be with the Washburn Lady Blues on April 9 in St. Joseph, Mo.

The Missouri Western Griffons traveled to Bolivar, Missouri, the weekend of March 5 to take on Southwest Baptist University and dominated the field as they swept the first meeting with the Bearcats.

After losing all four games against Fort Hays the weekend before, the Griffons were looking to turn things around and improve their record. After getting the right mindset going into the games, everything else just clicked.

“We went down there with the goal to beat them four times and sweep, anything less would have been unacceptable,” said senior outfielder Trevor Hannum.

“The way we approached the weekend was what we did best.”

The games Friday ended positively for the Griffons, winning 4-2 and 8-0. The good start helped raise the team’s confidence and end the meeting with the Bearcats with a 4 game sweep.

“The wins helped our confidence a lot because you never want to start out conference 0-4 and it gives us a lot of momentum leading into playing the rest of our conference series at home,” said senior pitcher Corey White.

The Griffons just simply outplayed Southern Baptist the whole weekend, having stellar pitching performances by Andrew Hebrard, John Cochran and Chris Sundvold. Also, producing their first errorless game as a team didn’t hurt much either.

“That was big for us as a team, the wins this week helped us get closer to finding our identity,” Hannum said.

The winning streak against Southwest Baptist continued on Saturday as the Griffons pulled out two wins 9-3 and 6-2.

Both teams got close to equal amount of hits all four games, with Western garnishing up 38 and SBU making contact 32 times. Yet Western was able to take advantage of their hits and contribute more runs than the Bolivar Bearcats.

“Our defense played a lot better than we did against Fort Hayes,” White said.

The team expects to take the momentum of the sweep and turn it into positive play for the remainder of the season. After the successful weekend, Griffon baseball improves their record to 6-4 overall and 4-4 in conference play, while Southern Baptist drops to 2-13 overall and 1-7 in the conference.

The Griffons finally play ball in St. Joseph territory on Mar. 13 against Missouri Southern State University.

The determined women of the Missouri Western tennis team were busy this week, having played a four game stretch at home which ended Saturday against Minnesota State- Mankato.

Western opened the stretch of matches on April 1, against the 26th ranked Washburn Lady Blues. Although the Griffons gave a valiant effort, they ultimately lost, 9-0, Tuesday afternoon.

With freshman Dominique Leone out for the season with an injury, the Griffons had to make some adjustments in their line-up. Lindsey Frisbie was bumped up to No. 2 doubles to play with Shelby Penno. The duo played hard, but fell to Washburn’s Lauren Harris and Rachel Stevens by a score of 8-4. Penno was also moved up to play No. 3 singles, but lost 6-3, 6-1 to Audrie Miller. Freshman Laura Kokuc got her first action of her young career as a Griffon, playing No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. She would fall short, 6-1, 6-1 to Lauren Harris in singles play.

The next match which was played on April 3 pitted the Griffons against the undefeated Truman State Bulldogs. Western would end up losing the match, 8-1.

The veterans of the team, Kristy Pechous and Shelby Penno, who were paired up in No. 1 doubles for the first time this season went out and smashed Lindsy Blair and Courtney Walther of Truman State by the score of 8-4. The senior, Pechous, would elevate her play in No. 1 singles winning the first game of her match 7-5 over Jennifer Salmon. Salmon responded winning the next two games of the match by scores of 6-4 and 10-8. Western’s No. 3 player Penno also played terrific in her singles match against Courtney Walther, but lost 6-3, 6-4. Western’s No. 2 player Laura Rutten, fell to Lindsy Blair by scores of 6-3, 6-3.

Even with the Griffons recent shortcomings, a vast improvement is being seen in the play of the players and the team, on a weekly basis. Sophomore Amber Adams is a testament to her own individual development.

“I feel that the experience I have gained this season is valuable. I do feel like I can do better and that the more I play the better I will become,” Adams said.

She also feels that the team is coming along in its play.

“I think that we are improving. We have changed some doubles teams around and that seems to be working better for us,” Adams said.

As the season winds down, we will be eagerly waiting to see how much more the Griffons tennis team will improve.   Â

The women’s tennis team came close to winning their first match in the MIAA in more than a year when they faced Missouri Southern on Friday.

“We are trying to break the losing mentality,” said Kristy Pechous, a junior college transfer from Arizona that came to play tennis at Missouri Western. “We haven’t been able to
close out matches, but I think we can get there.”

The tennis match was tied at four with won game left.

Missouri Western’s Michelle Ritter did everything in her power to win the match with her teammates cheering her on in eager anticipation. This win would mean a lot to the women who were on last year’s team that had to take two girls off of the soccer team to fill up their roster after the best player on the team quit.

“We almost won,” Pechous said. “Michelle had a really tough match.”

The tennis team has played well this season, and even though their record may not show it, they are taking a step in the right direction. By the end of the season, the Griffons are hoping to knock off one of teams in the MIAA.

Seniors need to lead team against MIAA opponents

Tennis at Missouri Western is on the rise with more experience, senior leadership and a new personality.

They were only 6-14 last year but look to have a better season with a full roster. The team had some of their best players quit last year, but this made the young and inexperienced players step in and play right away. The women hope last year’s experience equates to winning in the upcoming season.

“We all want to go to regionals and have a good season,” Kristy Pechous said.

The tennis team definitely wants to improve on the season that it had last year, and no one from that team – other than the two soccer players they needed to fill out a roster
last year – will be back and ready to prove they can play tennis with the best teams in the country and the MIAA.

“We need to build up strength and sustain it throughout the season, and we’ll do fine,” said Laura Rutten, a sophomore for the women’s tennis team.

The women have been working hard to get ready for the season. They hope that their hard play pays off and victories come.

“We’ve been getting up at 6 a.m. to condition and to play against each other,” senior Tammy Liebersbach said. “Hopefully, this gives us confidence that we can win and last year won’t be like this year.”

The Griffon ladies can see that this year’s team is different from last year’s by knowing each other better. Sharing the struggles of last season makes the team push each
other every day.

The team will be led by three seniors this year: Mary Pankiewicz, Tammy Liebersbach and Audra Scopen. These players will need to step up for the Griffons to have a good season.

Tammy Liebersbach was the person that represented the tennis team for player of the year at Missouri Western and will need to have another great season for the Griffons
to have any chance in the MIAA.

The Griffons didn’t win in the MIAA last year because it is one the hardest conferences in the nation for tennis.

“I think our first goal should be to win a conference game,” Liebersbach said. “Improving from last year is the No. 1 goal.”

Liebersbach agrees that winning is the goal.

“I think the first step to having a great season is to having a winning record,” Tammy Liebersbach said.

The Griffons first home game is against Emporia State on March 16 at the Noyes Tennis Center.
