Griffon volleyball won two games in a row this weekend, their first home stand and ending a 1-4 run after beating Pitt State and Missouri Southern.
The Griffons (8-5) dominated Pittsburg State (8-7) for their fifth win in a row, only allowing one set win in the last five meetings between the teams. They did not allow any more than 17 scores in a set and Pitt State only led once.
The Griffons didn’t trail until the first serve of the final set. Pittsburg State took a 1-0 lead to begin that set and never led again.
It was the team’s first three-set match since a Sept. 14 sweep of Colorado Mesa.
Missouri Western had a .270 hitting percentage over the three sets with 44 kills on the night. Both Sam Duncan and Ali Tauchen had 11 kills in the game and led the team. Lauren Murphy also led the team with 33 assists.
Missouri Western also beat Missouri Southern this last weekend, improving its record to 17-1 in its last 18 games against Southern.
The Griffons won back-to-back matches for the first time since starting the season 5-0.
Missouri Western totaled 86 digs, the third most for the team this season and the highest total in a four-set match.
Maryssa Recio had a career-high 15 kills to lead the Griffons and hit .300. Recio was one of three Griffons in double-digit kills along with Ali Tauchen – 14- and Sam Duncan’s 10. Tauchen also had 14 digs and hit .323.
Next up Missouri Western will travel to undefeated No. 4 Nebraska Kearney (15-0) and then to Fort Hays (6-9).
