Missouri Western’s upcoming homecoming week starts on Oct. 6 and will feature a ‘90s theme, with nine total events for Griffon students to participate in and will conclude with a football showdown against Missouri Southern on Oct. 12.

The week will start off with the event “Let’s Drive Into Homecoming” on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Fulkerson Center. Students are encouraged to bring blankets, pillows and other comforting items while they enjoy a showing of “Toy Story 4.”

Taking the theme into account, the 1990s inspired events for the week are ‘90s trivia, a ‘90s inspired silent party, and Griff Fit “Sweating to the ‘90s”-  three separate workout classes to ‘90s music.

Missouri Western senior Nah’Ryan Reed-Crawford is the person in charge of setting up homecoming week, and she wanted this year to be unique.

“We wanted to bring something different this year for homecoming. We wanted to bring color, vibrancy. That’s why we chose the ‘90s theme,” Reed-Crawford said.

The bright shirts and several ‘90s themed events show all the hard work that the Western Activities Council have put into the week. The main goal of WAC when deciding on events was to further involve and engage students, as well as faculty and the community.

“I’ve been planning it since March of 2019,” Reed-Crawford said.

Two events for a good cause are a food drive Oct. 7-11 and a blood drive on Oct. 10 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Blum 218 and 219.

WAC advisor isaiah Collier is ready for homecoming week to start.

“I’m most excited for the pep rally, because you get to see students on stage showcasing their talent, then there’s always a special guest,” Collier said. “It’s followed by the bonfire and fireworks.”

The pep rally will be on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Looney Complex, and the special guest for this year is hypnotist and comedian Chris Jones.

Saturday is filled with events starting at 9 a.m. with the parade and a free tailgate starting at 2 p.m. For young children, the Future Griffs Fun Zone will be in Remington Hall from 1-2:30 p.m. with food, games and fun. Lastly, Missouri Western’s football game starts at 4 p.m. All students, faculty and community members are invited to cheer on the Griffon football team against opponent Missouri Southern.
