The 26th Annual R. Dan Boulware Convocation on Critical Issues will be taking place on Thursday, Sept. 26 in the Looney Complex Arena.
This year’s event will feature Jon Meacham with his presentation, “The Soul of America: Moving Beyond Division and Hostility.”
Meacham has contributed to Time Magazine and the New York Times Book Review. He has also made regular appearances on CNN and MSNBC.
Meacham has produced many different books over issues in politics, religion and social issues and how they affect people’s daily lives. Some of these books include bestsellers such as “The Soul for America: The Battle for Our Better Angels,” “Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush,” and “Thomas Jefferson: The Art of Power.” His most recent book, “Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest and the Music That Made a Nation” was co-written with country music star Tim McGraw.
The R. Dan Boulware Convocation on Critical Issues program began in 1993 under the presidency of Janet Gordman Murphy. This program was ultimately started with the goal of bringing together the college community and talking about serious topics that affect students.
Freshman Arden Beard has high hopes that the convocation will bring up important social issues.
“I hope Jon Meacham comes and talks about LGBT rights and women’s rights,” Beard said. “I think this will lighten up everyone’s perspectives to come together and actually get involved.”
Before the convocation, there will be a breakfast with the speaker where some students will have the chance to meet Meacham and speak with him one-on-one. Following the convocation there will be a luncheon happening in the Fulkerson Center at 12 p.m., also featuring Meacham. Seats at the luncheon costs $40 and can be reserved at the following link: missouriwestern.edu/convocation/luncheon/.
