It’s official. The Kansas City Chiefs training camp will be returning to Missouri Western for the 10th consecutive season.

The Chiefs and Missouri Western renewed their contract in January of 2018 which also included an option for 2019 which has now been exercised. After a strong training camp in 2018, Missouri Western’s Athletic Director Josh Looney was confident the Chiefs would be returning to Missouri Western for the 2019 season.

“We were in a really good place with [the Chiefs] after last camp, and we operated expecting it would get extended by an additional year,” Looney said. “We were coming off one of our best years ever for crowds, the Chiefs had one of their most efficient camps which is a big goal of ours to provide that for them, and then obviously a great year.”

In a statement released by the Chiefs today, Missouri Western’s President Dr. Robert Vartabedian expressed his excitement in hosting the Chiefs for another season.

“After another outstanding season, excitement should be at an all-time high this summer when the Kansas City Chiefs return for their 10th training camp in St. Joseph,” Dr. Vartabedian said. “Thank you to Chiefs President Mark Donovan and Coach Andy Reid for continuing to embrace Missouri Western as their team’s summer training camp home. It truly is an honor. Hosting an NFL training camp is a team effort, and I’m grateful beyond words to everyone on campus and in the community that work together to make it a memorable experience for the fans.”

Also stated in the press release, Chief’s President Mark Donovan finds Missouri Western far enough from the Chief’s facilities in Kansas City, but still right in the heart of Chiefs Kingdom.

“Missouri Western State University has continued to deliver outstanding facilities and services for our annual training camp since we moved back to the state of Missouri prior to the 2010 season,” Donovan said. “The university and the city of St. Joseph provide our team the unique ability to go away for camp, while also offering resources and amenities for fans throughout Chiefs Kingdom to have access to their favorite team. We are thankful to Missouri Western State University leadership, specifically MWSU President Dr. Robert Vartabedian and Director of Athletics Josh Looney, for their continued support. We are looking forward to another summer in St. Joseph later this year.”

Missouri Western began hosting training camp in 2010, and their 10-year tenure is the third longest streak in Chiefs franchise history.

“To get to this point, to have 10 straight years at Missouri Western is a real testament to, not only the University, but the community and county support as well,” Looney said. “If this wasn’t worth it for the Chiefs, they wouldn’t keep coming back and likewise for the university. So, it’s really been a nice win-win for 10 years and that’s something to celebrate.”
