Women’s golf takes fifth

The Missouri Western women’s golf team finished tied for fifth place with Sioux Falls University in its only home tournament of the entire season, the MWSU Holiday Express Invitational, at the St. Joseph Country Club.

This is the third time that they have placed top five this season. Seniors Shi Qing Ong and Chong Yong shot a 161 to tie for seventh place. Tiffanie Yabut was not far behind them and pulled off a comeback to finish with a total 168. Then Katie Irvin shot a 171 while Jenna Kosmatka was last on the team, shooting a 184.

Irvin’s score of 171 would earn a spot in the top 30.

Omg would finish at the no. 1 spot when it came to par-3 scoring and 12th at par-5. Yong finished in the 16 spot at par-4. Irvin was second-to-last at par-5, although she would come in at no. 6 with 4 birdies. Yong finished second in the tournament with 22 pars while Ong was tied for third wth 21. Yabut would finish at the 16 spot with 17 pars.

Out of the six MIAA teams at the tournament, the Griffons would finish in fourth place. Nebraska-Kearney and Central Oklahoma led all MIAA schools with a tied score 79, which was also good enough to earn them a second-place finish overall in the tournament. Central Missouri came in third conference wise with a score of 82, landing them a overall spot of fourth. Northwest Missouri shot a 98 to finish fifth in the conference and eighth in the tournament. Meanwhile, Fort Hays State placed last among all MIAA schools with a score 105 and finished ninth at the invitational.

William Wood’s University would win the team title with a 633 and Katie Warren won the individual title championship with a three-over-par 147.

The tournament took place from Monday, March 19 to Tuesday, March 20. Western originally started the tournament tied for fourth overall.

Missouri Western travels to Pack Springs Invitational in Pueblo, Colorado on Monday, March 26 and Tuesday, March 27.
