Missouri Western’s staff had a shakeup as head coach Matt Williamson announced the promotion of Justin Richter to defensive coordinator before spring practice.
Just last year, Richter was hired on to be the defensive backs coach after he was a defensive graduate assistant at the University of California- Berkley. Richter’s secondary had success with an MIAA leading 14 interceptions held opponents to 212 passing yards per game.
Richter believes that he’s ready to be defensive coordinator.
“I’m excited to be able to control the defense,” Richter said. “I will have the same expectations as coach (Mike) Walton did. We’ve had a few spring practices and I feel like we’ve had good practices so far. I’m ready to be able to see how the defense will play this upcoming season.”
Richter said that the team will use the same philosophy that Walton had and he’ll continue to coach the safeties of the defensive backfield.
Richter also thinks that he’s in an ideal situation to be able to be a defensive coordinator at Western.
“I’m surrounded by many great coaches on the defensive side of the field,” Richter said. “I believe that the defensive line coach could be a defensive coordinator anywhere else. This is a great situation for me to be in and I’m excited to be able to call the defensive plays this upcoming season.”
Richter is also grateful to be able to add Gary Salgado to the defensive staff. Salgado will serve as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
“I’m happy to be able to bring on Salgado onto the staff,” Richter said. “He really helped me out and I’ve learned a lot of football from him. So it’s always great to be able to have him on the staff and he’ll be able to help our kids develop.”
Salgado comes to Missouri Western via Anglo State where he was defensive line coach and director of football operations for the past five years. While at Anglo State, Salgado coached multiple All-Lone Star Conference players. This includes Anglo’s all-time sacks leader Clayton Callicut.
The defensive coordinator position opened up whenever former coordinator Mike Walton accepted the defensive coordinator position at his alma mater, Eastern New Mexico University.
