Dr. Logan Jones will become the dean of the Craig School of Business on July 1, 2018 following the retirement of current dean Mike Lane.
Jones is currently a faculty member and director of the MBA program at Western. Lane said that he thinks Jones’s experience with the university will be an advantage.
“One of the good things is that he brings the history of knowing where we’re going and where we’re coming from,” Lane said.
“I think the blend of understanding where we are as a school, as programs, he starts way ahead of the game as opposed to someone coming from the outside,” Lane said.
Jones says that he plans on continuing the progress that the Craig School has already made.
“We’ve made a lot of changes adding several programs, additions to programs, and we actually added a minor,” Jones said. “We have a professional business minor starting in the Fall, which allows non business majors to go straight into the MBA program if they get the professional business minor which is 6 classes.”
The changes have led to unexpected growth.
“The growth in the MBA program has been quite a bit beyond our expectations,” Jones said. “With the addition of the online program, that growth is going to continue. So just adding some resources to deal with capacity issues there to make sure we can get courses taught and covered and so forth.”
Jones said that the strength of the School was a reason for an internal promotion.
“We don’t need any substantial changes as a school, so it made sense to promote from within to keep us on the same path,” Jones said. “That way you know exactly what you’re getting.”
Lane says that the path has included an expansion of faculty and program offerings.
“We’ve hired about 15 new faculty, we’ve created 3 undergraduate concentrations and majors,” Lane said. “One is supply chain management, which is a new major and then concentrations in entrepreneurship and human resource management. We’ve created two graduate programs- the masters of information management and the MBA. And we’re in the process of really creating another MBA programs, which is the online MBA program, which will launch next year.”
Looking back, Lane says that he appreciates the work that his staff has put in.
“I appreciate all of the hard work on the part of the faculty and the staff of the Craig School of Business in my 5 years her,” Lane said. “None of the changes that have occurred would’ve been possible without a good deal of work on all of their parts.”
