Five students got out of studying for a final this semester by painting a large mural on the second floor of Eder hall. The results are colorful and feature the faces of the painters hidden in the mural.
Indigo Gaydusek, Devin Halbirt, Drew Huffman, Shelly Lundy and Madison McKinley are in the art class Painting II together, and for
their final project they are painting the large mural on the hallways of the second floor in Eder.
The students’ mural will be finished by Wednesday, Dec. 6th when a reveal party in which students can mingle with the painters and eat free snacks will be at 5:00 in Eder.
Each student contributed their own idea towards the design and incorporated al- most all the ideas.
Devin Halbirt came up
with the idea for the orange and yellow earth painted on the wall towards the begin- ning of the hallway. Halbirt enjoyed the process of paint- ing the mural because of the impact he felt it would leave on students.
“Before we did this these walls were just plain gray. There was nothing on it, so I want students to look at this and get something out of it. There’s a lot of colors, there’s a lot to look at to maybe
brighten their day,” Halbrit said.
Indigo Gaydusek is one of the higher level painting stu- dents in the class and enjoys being able to get out of the classroom, and have her art reach students.
“[I like] just being out of the classroom for a minute and out in the actu- al world like where people will go out and actually see it. I really enjoy that aspect. People are walking by and
they’re saying, ‘hey this is so cool’, ‘we really like what you’re doing’ ‘there’s color on the wall, it looks happy’ just all the comments have been really awesome,” Gaydusek said.
The students received help on their mural from Kansas City artist J.T Daniels, a well- known artist in the commu- nity.
The class professor, Kathy Liao, is glad that the students were given the opportunity
to “leave their legacy” and to change Western hopefully for the better.
“The mural is not a way to make to add color to [the] space but to activate the peo- ple who inhabit that space. People coming by and talk- ing to each other, or asking the painters questions,” Liao said.
The class professor, Kathy Liao, received a $450 grant from Art Society to fund the supplies for the mural.
