Do you have what it takes to be the Voice of Western?
For some people, singing is their life. Singing brings them joy and happiness, and what better way to bring happiness than by singing your heart out?
The Western Activities Council once again held their annual “The Voice of Western” competition on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in Kemper Recital Hall, Spratt 101 at Missouri Western State University. The performance was free for students and to the public.
The Western Activities Council (WAC) is responsible for providing co-curricular programming and social activities such as movies, concerts, dances, lectures, performing arts, etc., for all students of Western.
Natalie Miller, President of Western Activities Council, tells all about how the competition first started and how it came to be now.
“WAC first introduced The Voice of Western to Missouri Western five years ago,” Miller said. “It became such a hit with the students that we kept bringing it back.”
The Voice of Western held auditions earlier on Oct. 19 and are now in the finale. The judges held 22 auditions, where only 15 students made teams. At each round 2 get eliminated from each team. Overall, the winner gets a grand prize of $1000.
“The judges consist of team Robert, team Willenbrink, and team Hamm,” Miller said. “We try to get faculty involved as much as we can, and for an event like this it’s awesome to have judges who are musically inclined.”
Gabe Thomas, Entertainment Director of Western Activities Council, explains why this event is great for students to be apart of.
“The Voice of Western is a student focused event, which is great way for students to get out and about and be with friends,” Thomas said. “It’s a great way for students to show off their talents and for their friends to cheer them on in the process.”
Kaitlyn Cawdwell, first-year student at Missouri Western, has attended all the rounds to support a friend who is competing.
“It’s an awesome event to go to,” Cawdwell said. “Not only am I here to cheer on a friend, but it also gives me a break from homework.”
The finalists in The Voice of Western this year are Dylan Walker, who is Team Hamm, Dianah Hidzir on Team Robert, and Briana Dice on Team Willenbrink. The Finale Event will be held on Wednesday Nov. 9 in in Kemper Recital Hall, Spratt 101 at 7 p.m. at Missouri Western State University.
