The Griffon volleyball team opened up conference play this past weekend by sweeping Missouri Southern and beat Southwest Baptist in four games–improving their record to 10-4.
Western traveled to Joplin on Friday to face off against the Lions. The Griffons dominated, winning 25-23, 25-11, 25-14. After an 11-7 run by Southern, Western came roaring back with a 5-0 rally–giving them the lead. The Griffons went on to win the set 25-23.
The next two sets weren’t near as close as the first. Missouri Western had a hitting percentage of .467 throughout the match and held the Lions to a .038 kill percentage. Rachael Friedrich and Kelsey Olion both had 11 kills while Rachael Losch and Stephanie Doak added on seven kills each.
Saturday’s matchup saw the Griffons travel to Bolivar, Missouri, to face against the Southwest Baptist Bearcats. Western won the match 25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 25-21.
The matchup in the first set saw a back and forth contest before Kelsey Olion’s kill would give the Griffons the edge and the first set.
MWSU raced off to an early 10-2 lead in the second set before Southwest would fight back late in the match to trim the lead to 23-21. After a Bearcat error, a Blair Russell kill would then run the Griffons to win the set.
The third set of the game saw Southwest take their turn at a set win 25-19. The fourth and final set of the day saw MWSU fight off the early stages of a back to back, before leading 15-10 and retaining the lead for the rest of the match.
Next up for the Griffons, they travel to Edmund, Oklahoma to face off against a tough 14-1 Central Oklahoma squad Friday, Sept. 30. The Bronchos are currently ranked 12 in the Division II National AVCA Poll. They then go to Pittsburg, Kansas, to face a struggling 2-12 Pitt State Gorillas team on Oct. 1 to conclude their eight-game road trip.
