The last five summers have had a reoccurring theme on campus: a whole lot of red on a black and gold campus.
The Kansas City Chiefs have been hosting their preseason training camp at Missouri Western for the previous five summers.
This past training camp was the final under contract between the Chiefs and Western. However, a contract extension of one year is in the works.
The original contract was for five years, with extensions of one year being negotiable, up to 10 years total.
Western provides almost everything – with the exception of food and transportation – for the Chiefs. Everything else, from the rooms they stay in to the facilities they use, is paid for or provided by Western.
Dec. 1 is the official deadline for a contract extension, but Western Athletic Director Kurt McGuffin said that they are working together to make the decision some time this month.
“The final decision date is December 1,” McGuffin said. “So, every year from here on out, for the next five years, December 1 will be the decision date. But, we hope to have it done here in October.”
The weekend of the Chiefs bye week, Oct. 12, is the time Western plans on meeting with the Chiefs to finalize the extension.
