The commencement speaker for the Spring 2014 graduation has been selected. Vocal music major Derek Thompson has been chosen as the commencement speaker. “I am honored to have been chosen to be the commencement speaker this semester,” Thompson said. “I have been involved in so many different areas on campus where I have met so many incredible people over the past four years.” Thompson was a residence hall assistant for two years. He also spent an additional year on the executive board of the Student Government Association under Katy Sisco and Dillon Williams. He was also involved in theatre productions during his time at Western. Thompson was chosen from a short list of five nominees. April Buntin, Lauren Prywitch, Jacob Scott and Katie Walkup rounded out the list. Thompson was chosen after an interview process. “I’m so excited to have the opportunity to speak on behalf of my graduating class,” Thompson said. “It’s a really special way to end my time here at Missouri Western.” Thompson said his speech will be focused around individuality, traditions and finding inspiration. Graduation will take place on May 10 in Spratt Stadium. Graduates will report to the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex at 9:30 a.m., with the ceremony proceeding to the football field, starting at 10:45 a.m.
