The athletic department held the 15th annual Student-Athlete Honors Banquet Monday Apr. 28 in the Fulkerson Center. The banquet is held to honor athletes for their achievements over the season both on the field or gym and off. Fulkerson was filled with athletes from each sport sanctioned by at Western. For the first award, athletes were acknowledged for their achievement of becoming All-Americans in the 2013-14 season. The winners were Scott Groner for Football, Reggie Jordan for Football, Bubba Dotson for Baseball, Raphael Spencer for Football, Kyle Simpson for Baseball, Brandon Simmons for Baseball, Michael Schultz for Baseball, Grant Fink for Baseball and Maegan Roemmich for Softball. Patsy Smith was also recognized for her 20 years of service at Western. She recently announced her retirement. Afterwards, it t was time to announce the winners for the newly founded Tom Smith Career Achievement award. This award is given to an athlete that has played all four years in their respective sport. Softball pitcher Jackie Bishop was the winner for the women, and Quarterback Travis Partridge was the winner for the men. Legendary coach and St. Joseph native Bill Snyder was the recipient for the Distinguished Alumni Award. Snyder was the head coach for Kansas State from 1989-2005. He was named the head coach of Kansas State again after leaving the game for years. Snyder has won two Big 12 championships and was named the Big 12 conference coach of the year four times. Andrew Molloy was the winner of the Scholar-Athlete award. Molloy is a triple major in accounting, finance and management. He has achieved a 3.95 GPA, and was also named to the All-MIAA Academic Honor Roll in 2012. For her hard work in the community, Softball player Bre Fleschner received the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s Volunteer of the year award. Fleschner currently leads the team in doubles and runs scored. The biggest awards of the night were handed out at the end. Eleven students were nominated as student athletes of the year. Seven females were nominated and four males were nominated. The women were Tiffanie Abrams for Basketball, Alexa Adams for Soccer, Jackie Bishop for Softball, Alyssa Dougan for Tennis, Erica Rottinghaus for Volleyball, Shelby Stone for Golf and Emily Thomson for the Cheer Squad. For the men, it was Kalvin Balque for Basketball, David Chew for Baseball, Derek Hawkins for Golf and Travis Partridge for Football. Ultimately, Jackie Bishop won the award for Female Student Athlete of the Year. Travis Partridge won the award for Male Student Athlete of the Year. Partridge and Bishop walked away as the biggest winners of the night, receiving awards for two different categories.
