Historian and Walter Cronkite biographer Douglas Brinkley has been announced as the speaker for the 21st R. Dan Boulware Convocation on Critical Issues.

Brinkley will be speaking Tuesday, Nov. 4, at 10 a.m. at Missouri Western’s Looney Sports Complex. Brinkley will be speaking on what would have been Walter Cronkite’s 98th birthday.

Western’s President Robert Vartabedian spoke of his excitement for the Cronkite expert to speak on campus.

“Last Nov. 4, we dedicated the Walter Cronkite Memorial to honor the most influential journalist of the 20th century, it’s appropriate that we mark Cronkite’s birthday this year with his biographer, one of the most prolific biographers living today,” Vartabedian said. “This man is a scholar on many fascinating subjects, and I know that he will be an excellent speaker at Convocation.”

Since the opening of the Walter Cronkite Memorial students have began associating the memorial with the university. Freshman Anna O’Connor agreed that Brinkley was a good choice for the school.

“I have classes in Spratt so I have seen the memorial several times and it’s really interesting. I think it’s really nice that the school has it, it doesn’t just preach history it has history right here in front of us, I think Dr. Brinkley speaking is an extension of that,” O’Connor said. ‘I think it’s a really nice tribute to Walter Cronkite and I think it will be really interesting for those who like history or for our seniors who grew up watching him on TV.”

The convocation is open to the public at no cost, and many are expected to attend.
