The Griffons will welcome the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist to the MWSU Fieldhouse for the ninth MIAA conference game of the season.
The Bearcats sit at 6-6 overall and 1-4 in the MIAA going into Saturday’s contest. They are currently on a two-game losing streak, after falling to Fort Hays 93-66 at home, and to Northeastern State 60-47 on the road.
SBU’s best game came on New Year’s Eve, as the Bearcats defeated Avila 104-52.
For the Bearcats, Brook Duncan is their saving grace. She leads the team with 186 points, averaging 15.5 per game. Duncan also leads the team with 82 rebounds, averaging 6.8 per game. She also has 12 blocks on the season, leading SBU.
To back up Duncan, Jacqui Zelenka is a dominating force for the Bearcats. She is tied for second on the team with 112 points, averaging 12.4 per game. Duncan and Zelenka are the only two players for SBU who average in the double-digits. Zelenka is close behind Duncan in rebounds with 74, averaging 8.2 per game.
As a team, the Bearcats shoot 74.9-percent from the line and 42.7-percent from the field. They also average 42.8 rebounds and 73.6 points per game.
But the Griffons are evenly matched with their upcoming opponent.
“We want to try to protect our home floor. It’s our chance to be successful,” head coach Rob Edmisson said.
For Western, Sharniece Lewis leads the way with 122 points this season. Lewis averages 9.4 points per game.
Quenisha Lockett has 108 points of her own, claiming second on the team. Lewis and Lockett are the only two Griffons with triple-digit points totals.
Tiara Hall leads the team with rebounds, collecting 89 so far this season and averaging 6.8 per game.
Krysten Crawford leads the team with 15 steals.
As a team, Western shoots 58.6 percent from the line and 38.8 percent from the field. They average 39.2 rebounds and 63 points per game.
“We’ve got to be more consistent in our shooting. That’s probably our biggest thing, consistency in our shooting and free throw shooting,” Edmisson said.
The Griffons are ready to play Southwest Baptist on Sat., Jan. 18. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
