Only in America

,10_12_13,ImbiriI was so astonished when I first arrived at Los Angeles airport for the first time in United States of America in 2005.

I had my own magical moment when I used their bathroom for the first time. “Wow, did that just happen,” was my response for everything.

As I walked in the restroom, the door opened automatically, the toilet flushed by itself, the water turned on automatically when I washed my hands and everything had an automatic label on it.

At first, I thought Automatic was the name of a person. I said in my head, “I would like to meet him.” And then I found out that there’s more that this strange culture has to offer. Only in America…

American students have to take an English class. I don’t remember taking a Papuan class. I remember my first semester in college, when I walked in to English 101 and thought everyone in class was foreign just like me.

There is a game called football that is primary played with hands, and in other countries, soccer is known as football.

Majority of people only know one language, where as in other countries, most people are bilingual. Fact: I’m learning my fifth right now.

When your American friends say, “How are you,” “What’s up,” “How’s it going,” they basically are saying “Hi.” And, “I’ll think about it,” means “I probably won’t.” When you try to carry on a conversation, it usually becomes awkward.

Parents and professors are treated like friends. I never knew my dad’s name until the end of the middle school when I got a strange call asking to talk to Derek. I told them there’s no one named Derek here, but good thing my mom was there in the room to tell me that the phone call was for dad. That’s when I realized that Derek is my dad. All of the professors in my country have to be called “Sir,” “Ma’am” or their profession.

Fast food restaurant chains are like your neighbor; you will find them on every corner of the street.

College students are allowed to come to class with colorful pajamas. I’m pretty sure she just got up from bed and walked straight to class. I hope she brushed her teeth.

I think it is important for college students to get to know other cultures. Missouri Western has a very diverse number of International students.

Look around, stop us and talk to us, we sure would like to talk to you, as well, and share more about our culture and experiences.
