Soccer stuns Wayne State for first home win

Western started up Family Weekend with a 1-0 victory over the Wildcats of Wayne State on Friday, Sept. 13.

After a tough loss on Tuesday, the Griffons had high hopes of a shutout victory over the Wildcats.

Wayne State, now 0-3, only managed to get two of their nine shots on goal. But they racked up 14 fouls and a yellow card for Josie Brown.

The Griffons set a record for shots and shots on goal in a game, getting 14 of 29 on goal.

The first half was quiet, with no score on either end. Western goalkeeper Sarah Lyle only had 2 saves on the day.

Western was ready to go after halftime. Midfielder Ashley Juravich scored her second goal of the season off of an assist from forward Tara Russell at the 43 minute mark of the game. The Griffons kept Wildcat goalkeeper Kylie Comba busy; she racked up 13 saves on the day.

Juravich’s goal would put Western up 1-0. The score would remain the same, giving the Griffons their second victory of the season and their first win at home.

The 1-0 win brings Western up to a 2-2 record. Forward K.C. Ramsell, Russell and Juravich all had 3 shots on goal a piece. Midfielder Teddi Serna pitched in two of her own and midfielder Bailey Dervin chipped in another.

The Griffons head to Kirksville, MO to face off against the Bulldogs of Truman State. Game time is set for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17.
