With preseason over and the semester well underway, Western have their first season openers away from home.

Their first game against Bemidji State University is scheduled on Friday September 6 at 7PM. BSU is a team that went 10-7-2 last year, they have fantastic accuracy on the field but play aggressively as far as offense goes. Their top player Mary O’Brien, led last season’s team in most points scored and most shots taken. With such an aggressive player on the opposite team to begin with, it sets the tone for the rest of the season.

The second game against Minnesota State is scheduled on Sunday September 8, at noon. MSU-Moorhead has solid defense and Victoria Hoffman and Carole Braschayko led them last year with 47 saves a piece last season. Overall they finished off last year’s season with a record of 4-12-2.

The Griffons will be returning their star midfielder Katie Kempf who suffered a torn ACL last year. She scored four total goals last year, with two being the deciding game winner. Set to break the single-season goal record, after nine games she had to call her season quits to nurse her knee injury. The sophomore will add some much needed fire power and she we also be looked at as the leader of the team.

“With any season opener, we are very excited to actually play our first game,” Head Coach Chad Edwards said.  “The players have worked very hard this preseason and I know we are prepared to play at a high level. The players are definitely ready to compete! We have a lot of new quality players combined with solid experienced returners that will need to mesh well together.

“I am extremely confident with this group of players and I can’t wait to see them in game action. The games this weekend will certainly be an early test with two in-region, high level opponents.”
