Western opened up the weekend with a 2-0 road loss to no. 13 Graceland University on Friday, Sept. 20 in Lamoni, Iowa.
The game was a quick silencer for the Griffons.
Stephanie D’Cruz of the Yellow Jackets put up her first goal of the night at the 28 minute mark off of an assist from Sarahi Ortiz Casillas. The score would remain 1-0, in favor of Graceland, going into halftime.
D’Cruz sealed the game for Graceland in the second half. She knocked in another goal in the 53rd minute, making it 2-0. The assist went to Brooke Douglas.
The 2-0 loss puts the Griffons at a 2-4 record to start MIAA conference play.
Western goalkeeper Rayelin Garcia got her first start of the season with a concussed Sarah Lyle out for the game. Garcia made six saves in the goal for the night, but would fall to a 0-1 record.
Graceland goalkeeper, Maria Cortez Ramos, had seven saves on the night.
The Griffons knocked back 11 shots to match Graceland’s 22. Despite only getting 11 shots, Western was able to get seven of them on goal.
Midfielder Teddi Serna made three of her four shots on goal. Forward Maddie Welde managed one of her two on goal. And forwards K.C. Ramsell and Tara Russell each had one shot on goal.
The Griffons open up MIAA conference play at home when they welcome the Lions of Lindenwood to Spratt. Game time is set for Sunday, Sept. 22 at noon.
