Flying Far to Save Lives

Chris Philley, who has been flying for ten years come December, explains the procedures for taking off and landing. Rosecrans is the airport in which the helicopters are based at and they cover an effective area of 150 nautical miles, a nautical mile is the same as 1.15 miles. “Sometimes we’re not able to see exactly what the area is like before we land, which is why we depend on first responders and law enforcement to tell us about any power lines or tall buildings in the area.” Chris Philley The helicopter takes off after Criminal Justice students learn how to work with emergency helicopters and how to find and clear a landing zone. These helicopters burn through a gallon of fuel per minute.
