Western did not renew the contract of former Vice President for Student Affairs Esther Peralez, according to a press release from the President’s office Tuesday morning.
President Robert Vartabedian said that the decision did not stem from Western’s budgetary crisis and could not comment further on why the University decided to not renew Peralez’s contract.
Under Peralez, 13 previous employees of Western retired early or left because their contracts were not renewed. Several of these previous employees were dissatisfied with Peralez’s leadership.
The Division of Student Affairs will be lead by current Provost Jeanne Daffron and Associate Vice President and Dean of Students Judy Grimes. In addition to their regular duties, both of them will be absorbing the duties of the vice president of student affairs.
“It’s quite a bit extra,” Vartabedian said. “I hope it’s manageable, and I appreciate the fact that they are willing to pull together and provide leadership for the student affairs unit.”
Vartabedian said that the current plan is to have Daffron hold office hours in Blum. He also said that Daffron will only be in the position for a month.
“I thought that would be the better way of handling things rather than dropping everything in the lap of the associate vice president,” Vartabedian said. “After a month we’ll look at the lay-of-the-land and look at what we need to do structurally with that unit.”
