Ex-smoker calls shenanigans on smokers on campus

It has been 28 days since the last time a cigarette has touched my lips, and I am past the cravings. Upon the last visit with my doctor and a pulmonary test, the results he gave me were that I had the lungs of a 90-year-old man. I have not smoked since because I have a desire to live compiled by needs of my children. The point in this opinion is brief and will be irritating to smokers.

I can’t stand your smoke anymore. I cannot stand the ground littered with cigarette butts making our campus look disgusting. I take pride knowing that I will graduate from Missouri Western State University, but I cannot picture my graduation picture with cigarette butts littering the ground behind me. Seriously, if you want to smoke on campus, have respect in how you dispose of the remnants.

I am 41 years old and it took this long for me to learn my lesson. I hope others will learn from my mistakes, considering health issues.

Recently, I joined the Non Traditional Student Association, and we met on a Saturday shortly after a rain and picked up cigarette butts. I mention the rain to associate mud with our experience. Our worst situation was in between Eder and Murphy Halls. It was one week or less before it was littered again. This came after pleas to help keep it clean.

Enjoy your smoking privileges for the time being, but be aware that voices like mine are going to slice your rights to pieces.

Yes, I used to be a smoker, but that does not mean I am willing to protect your rights.

Many state and federal locations do not allow smoking. Many college campuses have already banned smoking on their property. What makes you think MWSU isn’t next?

I can now relate to complaints from non-smokers walking back and forth between classes complaining of cigarette smoke. It disgusts me and I take it as a threat.

My will power is amazing. I want to live and if living doesn’t concern you then keep sucking on that fire because you are bound to get burned. Will power drives a person that has meaning and purpose in life. For me, it is my children.

Smoke away with disregard for those who don’t appreciate your nasty habit because I assure you I am one of them, only my voice will be strong in government bodies that have the power to end your lung filled festival.

I have survived one of the hardest things I have ever had to do, and I guarantee I am done with smoking.

The thing for me to do now in every ones best interest is to make it difficult for you to irritate me with your nasty habit.

I will fight tooth and nail to end the nicotine insanity, but I will also lend support.

Call 1-800-quit-now. They offer free nicotine gum or patches along with tips and a coach available 24-7 to help you kick it. It’s free, and there are no more excuses.

I hope I have reached someone with this opinion. Even though I am still fresh in my nicotine sobriety, I promise to never go back.

Who knows how long I have to live, but I can honestly say I am in no mood to encourage the process.

A cowboy killer would truly say, “Live roping, or die smoking.”

Don’t be ridiculous. You gave up 28 days ago and you act like you’ve never smoked in your life. At this stage it’s too early to say that you’re done. Who are you kidding here? I know who – YOURSELF. Look at you. Gee, you’re 41? You’re obese and you look like 55 at least. Sooner than from smoking, you’ll die of a heart attack or stroke. Start exercising and stop eating junk. Don’t blame cigarettes for everything. Anti smoking Nazi!

I am a smoker and respect your thoughts and other non smokers but they also need to realize and respect mine. I am 45 and soon to be 46. The fact of the matter is everything will kill you now days from the air you breathe(not from cigarettes entirely) but down to the water we drink and the food we eat. I quit for almost a month and went back. Never say never. You just might be eating your words? If I ever decide to quit smoking, than I will not chastise anyone who smokes. Ex-Smokers are the worst. The fact of the matter is it is our right to smoke. This is the United States of America. If I smoke, than that it is my business. They have tried everything to ban smoking, but they will never be able to stop it. They tried this in the 1920′s called prohibition. It did not work. You are bound to die of something someday. My mom’s best friend died of lung cancer and never smoked a day in her life. I have to smoke for calming my anxiety. Cigarettes are actually and anti depressant for me. They calm me. I have PSTD and Panic attacks. The fact of the matter even though you quit does not support that you will never get lung cancer or COPD, you are still not immune. Please do not pass judgement on Smokers until you know the facts. At least I am not abusing alcohol or drugs. I think all of us smokers know the dangers and risks associated with smoking.

While I agree that everyone has a right to do what they wish with their own bodies, I wish that MWSU was a smoke free campus. It is highly unnerving to be forced to choke down someone elses cigarette smoke while walking between classes. Not to mention having that person heavily cloaked in tobacco smoke sit within a 5 foot perameter. Others to have physical issues that are effected by your smoking, myself included. When accosted by someone elses cigarette smoking my breathing siezes, a very uncomfortable feeling I must say. All I, or anyone else can do is look around and think, Wow that stinks.

  4. Even though I have never been a smoker I can definitely understand what it’s like to have an addiction- but not at the expense of other peoples health!! All those out there committed against smoking- Keep up the good work!

  5. Schoene Site! Dieser Artikel ist gut geschrieben. Danke dafuer.

I am an ex smoker too. When I started Western,I was a smoker though. Out of courtesy to other peoples choice not inhale smoke, I went over to the provided picnic table by Murphy. Come on guys, it is a respect thing. I’m not saying don’t smoke, just do it away from the lungs of those who choose not to. Food for thought…

  7. Which is truly very worthwhile, and really does make me wonder where it’s all regulated going. I will be curious is it possible to supply a lot more information about this? I’m a bit puzzles to how this can all add together. My mate did let me know earlier this week, about the lines of what you will be talking about, yet it’s still tough to believe.
