Student offers tips for freshmen homesickness

As a college student, it is hard to adjust to a new surrounding, especially when you are used to living with your parents your whole life. It’s not uncommon for freshmen or even for upper classmen to get home sick. Every time I would get homesick, one thing that helped me a lot when I was a freshman was, every weekend or every other weekend I would go home.

Since I live in Kansas City, it’s only 45 minutes. For those of you who don’t live 45 minutes away, calling your parents or a member of your family every once in a while might help you cope when you get homesick. Another thing that might work is by bringing something back from home, like a photo or a teddy bear, something that reminds you of home. When I use to get homesick, another way that I would cope is by writing in my journal, or by writing poems. The poems don’t necessarily have to do with how you’re feeling at the time, I just found writing my thoughts down, (whatever that might be at the time), takes the stress off my shoulders.

When it comes to going to college, for me, the farther the better. Giving the fact that I have been sheltered my whole life, I tried to go out of state the first chance I got. It was nothing against my parents, I just wanted to get away, and a community college was not it. I wanted to get as far from home as possible because I wanted to be around a new environment, I wanted to be on my own for the first time and get the college experience that I heard all my older friends talk about.

When I got to Missouri Western State University, my first year was good. When I started my sophomore year, it was nothing like what I expected. Once again I needed a change. The reason why my freshmen year was so good was because everything was so new to me.

So by the time I became a sophomore, I had the mind set like, I’ve seen it all and I’ve done it all. College is what you make it. Of course there are going to be those days where there is nothing to do and there are going to be days where there’s something to do everywhere you go. You just going to have to roll with the punches and make the best out of any situation, good or bad. Like I said before, college is what you make it, and if you don’t feel like you are getting that college experience and a good education, then transfer!
