Missouri Western has reached a decision and has hired Cory Frederick as their new head volleyball coach. Frederick becomes the sixth head volleyball coach in the history of the program.
Frederick was formerly the head men’s volleyball coach for the Park University Pirates. He compiled a career record of 105-16 in five seasons at Park. He led the Pirates to the 2008 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Championship and a 29-1 record. Frederick chose Missouri Western because he sees a bright future for the Griffons.
“I am looking forward to getting started because I see a lot of good things about Missouri Western,” Frederick said at his press conference during the weekly Griffon Luncheon.
The Griffons chose Frederick over a variety of other candidates. One reason for him being chosen is his ties to the Missouri Western program. He served as an assistant coach under former Griffon head volleyball coach Cindy Brauck from 2001-2003. Athletic director David Williams believes the character of Frederick made him the right choice.
“Cory is a great fit for this department because he wants to win with integrity,” Williams said. “I believe he is a person that can win championships, while maintaining the integrity of Missouri Western.”
Frederick inherits a Missouri Western volleyball team that struggled to earn victories last season. The Griffons, who had no seniors on the team, finished the season 4-32. Madison Benton, who was one of the veteran leaders for the Griffons, believes Frederick can change the attitude of the program.
“We are all really excited and hopefully it will change the way we play,” Benton said. “We all want to win really bad and we believe he can take us to the next level.”
In Frederick’s five season at Park University, they made the NAIA National Tournament, this included a runner up finish in 2007. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1998, were he competed in Division I club volleyball. He was also the head coach of Fridley High School in 2000. Frederick is honored that Missouri Western picked him to lead their volleyball program.
“It’s a real privilege to be picked because I know many talented coaches wanted this job,” Frederick said.
Frederick replaces Tiffany Mastin, who resigned in December. The Griffons will return many key players including: Meghan Voelz, Kelli Sicner, Lauren Burbach, Benton and many more. Frederick will have a full cupboard going into next season as the Griffons coach.
