The votes are in, students have spoken and a new Western Activities Council presidential administration will take office.
Keisha Caldwell and Dana Anderson won the presidential race for WAC over their opponents China Thomas and Jasmine Wilson 456 votes to 230 votes with just under 690 of the 5,470 MWSU students voting in the WAC race.
The new WAC duo will take office in April 2009.
WAC President elect Keisha Caldwell, a second year MWSU student majoring both in Business Administration and Marketing, is very excited about winning the election.
“I am very ecstatic about being elected as WAC president and I am looking forward to working with the incoming Student Government Association President and Vice President Josh Todd and Ernest Chamblee, and my Vice President Dana Anderson,” Caldwell said. “I think we will really bring a great deal of change to the MWSU campus. This is my first time being elected in office so I am really excited.”
The President Elect already has her beginning tasks lined up.
“One of the first tasks I’m going to do when I go into office is build a stronger E-board,” Caldwell said. “I’m going to try and have an E-Board retreat and have leadership training and build better relationships among each other. This will just help us build a stronger bond and look presentable to prospective members.”
Caldwell explained what she wants to focus on after establishing a stronger E-board.
“I would like the students to have more of a say with our events so I plan on doing surveys within e-mails,” Caldwell said. “This way we can reach every student rather than a select group.”
She shared her hopes of diversifying and how she would go about doing this.
“I would really like more diverse programming with WAC, so taking surveys is the first step,” Caldwell said. “Hopefully Western students see that and will respond to it.”
The New WAC President Elect encourages student input.
“My administration will be different from previous presidents because I am a really laid back student like everyone else,” Caldwell said. “I am the type of person who doesn’t mind having other students approach me and ask questions about WAC and what they would like to see from WAC.”
Caldwell shared her thoughts on character traits that are ideal for a leader to possess.
“I believe that when it comes to being a president, you have to be willing to relate and be able to reach others on different levels and understand where they are coming from,” Caldwell said. “I know I can do that because, anyone can vouch for me, I always have a smile on my face.”
Caldwell encourages students to feel comfortable coming to her with any type of feedback.
“I would like the students of Missouri Western to know they can come up to me anytime about any questions, comments or concerns regarding WAC,” Caldwell said. “Feel free, I am all ears.”
Caldwell encourages students to become a part of this organization. Meetings are held every Wednesday at 4 p.m. in Blum 223.
WAC is responsible for providing co-curricular programming and social activities in the form of movies, concerts, dances, lectures, performing arts, etc., for all students at Western.
