Driving safety rules are laws, not hints or suggestions

Some where along the line this semester it seems we have lost the campus’ driving rules. I have been noticing more violations and less campus police.

A great deal of effort is given to parking violations, which do not kill or injure.  I don’t see very many tickets for moving violations being issued on campus.

Feeling safe on campuses today is a big issue.  One of the ways we can feel safer is if everyone slows down and follows the safety rules.

Last Friday morning I was entering the campus by the Faraon street entrance.  I was driving the limit of 25 miles per hour until I arrived at lot H. When I began to signal for my turn the student behind me accelerated and passed blowing his horn.

He also felt the need to show me his one digit SAT score as he passed.  I agree with comedian Jerry Seinfeld; showing me your finger while driving doesn’t impress me. Do something special; show me your toe while driving. That would at least testify that you have a little talent.

Anyway he was apparently upset that I was observing the speed limit.  I take the sign to mean that is the limit, not a suggestion.

That same morning I began to enter the crosswalk and could hear that the oncoming car was not slowing down. I returned to the safety of the sidewalk just in time to avoid not one, but two cars speeding by me within inches.

Both cars had student stickers on the rear of the vehicles. I was too shaken and amazed at the lack of care while they were driving to do anything but stand there and talk myself into breathing again.

These incidents seem almost funny now looking back, but soon someone is going to get hurt. We cannot push these odds forever without a tragedy.

I know it is tough to leave campus after a long week of student life without some sort of celebration and acting out, but please make sure you are always safe.

The life you save may be your own.

A friend of mine had his life destroyed after a stupid act, which cost a young lady her life.  He is still paying off the family for the wrongful death lawsuit.

This accident happened when he was at teen, and many times he has expressed to me that he would gladly change places with the person he killed if it would buy a day without having to think about what he did.
