This is my second year at Missouri Western and I have become a fan of the football team, the only problem is I am afraid to admit it. Let me explain.
Every team I has ever rooted for in my life have let me down. The three main teams I have rooted for are the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals and the Kansas Jayhawks. Each one has let me down numerous times.
In 1996 the Chiefs play the Colts in a playoff game better known as the Lin Elliot game. Elliot misses three field goals and the heavily favored Chiefs lose the game. I sit in front of the television for two hours in disbelief of what just occurred.
I compare the Chiefs to the girl at the bar that you talk to the whole night then twenty minutes before closing time she tells you she has a boyfriend. They just build me up, to let me down.
The Royals won the World Series in 1985. I was born in 1986, it’s been steadily downhill ever since.
When I go to the Royals game the highlight of, the night is the hot dog derby. I cheer for mustard to win and of course ketchup pulls it out. I can’t even pick the right hot dog. To make up for it I claim ketchup is on the juice and that is the only reason he won.
Kansas Jayhawks basketball won a national title in 1988 and I was three remember nothing about the game. The only thing I remember is the 2003 national championship game. I still wake up in cold sweats with the image of Hakim Warrick blocking Micheal Lee’s potential game tying three-pointer. I won’t even mention Bucknell or Bradley because I probably will just start crying.
My sport’s life is falling apart at the seams. The Chiefs are terrible this year, the Jayhawk’s always clutch in big games and the Royals… Well there the Royals.
This is why I am afraid to be a Griffons football fan. With me being a behind the scenes fan, the Griffons beat the Pittsburg State Gorillas at Pittsburg for the first time since 1984. This makes me want to cheer out loud for them even more. I will not fall for this trap.
For the future of Missouri Western’s football program I will have to be an undercover fan. This way I will not hurt the team’s chances for any sort of success. I may even have to pull a Daniel Stern in Celtic Pride (wear the other team’s jersey). I won’t take it that far, but maybe I should. When Missouri Western takes the field I will cheer for them, I just won’t let anyone hear me for fear of what might happen.
