Fifteen of Western’s aspiring Cindy Crawfords and Tyson Beckfords strutted their stuff to uproarious cheers at the annual Campus Activities Board Fashion Show as part of Springfest last Wednesday. Held in the Fulkerson Center, where a full-sized, three-sided catwalk had been erected and row after row of chairs had been arranged, the show attracted 107 spectators and loads of applause, laughs and fun.

“It was good and went very well,” CAB Director of major attractions Tiana McDowell said.

Spectator Micki Ackerson felt similarly.

“It was good,” she said. “I really liked the outfits, but it was a little unorganized with the timing. They should have been faster coming out. But everyone looked really nice, and I wish I had been in it.”

Comedians Alfred and Seymour opened the show and performed their hilarious act in between sets while the models jumped into outfit after outfit. TJ Maxx at the North Village Shoppes and The Buckle and Vanity from the East Hills Mall were the three resources that provided the evening’s fabulous looks, which the models chose all by themselves.

When the models were ready, the lights were dimmed and strobes and speakers blasted a very walkable beat for the models to sashay to, in addition to the bright flash coming from audience member’s digital cameras. They came out two at a time, some of them dancing, some of them strutting, but all were accompanied by barely restrained pandemonium on the part of the crowd, in addition to fabulous looking clothes, flawless hair and coordinated accessories.

Although the first two sets were put together mostly of models in everyday, casual clothes, they progressed to semi-formal looks by the last set of the show. This was an evening definitely owned by the Western’s fashionistas.

The crowd responded well, not only to the models, but also to the comedians, whose routine included talented break-dancing and hilarious jokes. They even pulled up a few brave audience members out of crowd to see if they could out dance them. Although some came close, they were no match for the obviously much-practiced and perfected comedic duo.

Show attendee Brandi Stapleton had enough of the Alfred and Seymour.

“It was okay,” she said. “The comedians could have been a little better, but overall, it was good.”

Because of a scheduling conflict with Residence Council Bingo Night and some intramural sports, the regularly healthy crowd was a little less than CAB usually sees at the show.

“I thought it went very well,” CAB co-adviser Sandy  Rogers said. “The clothing from the vendors that the models selected was terrific. I was impressed with how well they did, and how good they looked. Alfred and Seymour were funny, and there was a good amount of audience participation. I know the committee and models worked very hard for this event, because doing a fashion show isn’t easy. Our crowd was a little smaller than usual with the other events going on this evening, but everything turned out well.”
