A banner displaying “CAB is WAC” might raise a few eyebrows, but it was all in good fun at the CAB Street Fair April 20. The banner was to promote the name change from Campus Activities Board to Western Activities Council, which will take affect fall 2007.

In addition to the banner, the street fair offered laser tag, a giant blowup slide, snow globe photos, funny photos, sand candle making, Dance Dance Revolution, popcorn and  refreshments. And who could forget every broke college student’s favorite, free tshirt give-a-ways, all of which started at 7 p.m., the fair’s kick off time.

Myisha Robinson, director of promotions for CAB and a freshman here at Western, was impressed with the turnout of the street fair and this week’s Springfest activities as a whole.

“Springfest is so far, so good,” Robinson said. “We had a good turnout tonight, about 40 or 50 people.”

Robinson was eager to promote the new name change.

She said she feels the new name will not only tie the organization better to Western, but may dispel any confusion over what CAB does as an organization.

“I like the new name,” Robinson said. “When I first came to campus, I thought CAB was service that drove [students] to class.” Robinson said a lot of planning went into the event.

“We had to find a good date when nothing else was happening on campus, which was hard, and reserve the spot,” she said. “We also had a lot of help from maintenance with setting
everything up.”

Regardless of how much work went into the night, Robinson is optimistic about CAB and it’s future.

“CAB is a really good organization to meet people and get involved on campus,” she said. “It’s also a good way to keep busy.”

Western freshman Ashley Johnson decided to check out the street fair, after hearing about it from a friend.

“It’s a good event so far,” Johnson said. “I liked the slide, the snow globe photos and the sand art candles. My favorite so far was probably the snow globe photos.”

Johnson has attended many of the events throughout Springfest and said her favorite was the fashion show.

Johnson wasn’t the only Western student who heard about the street fair via word of mouth. Senior Nicole Kaysing was also invited by friends, who she attended the fair with.

“My favorite activity was the big blow up slide,” Kaysing said. “It was really fun to do flips and jump around on.”

Kaysing also enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere of the street fair, as opposed to other Western events.

“I really liked how laid back everything was tonight,” Kaysing said.
