Generation Me: narcissistic self-servers or confident over-achievers?

A recent article on CNN.com was about a study done by five psychologists who claim that college students today are more narcissistic and self-centered than their predecessors. They believe this trend will play out with problems in personal relationships and in American society.

Apparently we have been told too many times that we are special and have gotten swollen heads from it. If we are slightly arrogant, it is because we have a right to be. It was also forced on us.

Granted, we aren’t the first generation to go to college and get jobs and become a part of modern-day society, but we are the first ones to have gone through the whole “selfesteem’ era. You remember the videos and long talks with counselors and teachers about teen suicide and self-esteem. We were told that low self-esteem is problematic and that we should be proud of ourselves, love and respect ourselves. Now they see the results of this movement and are now intimidated by the self- assured and confident individuals that are now looking to take more powerful roles in society.

Is this a legit fear? Has Big Brother created monsters? Are we to feel bad about being much more independent and confident than our grandmothers and grandfathers? Well, from what we have learned, no, we will never feel bad or sorry for what they created in us. We are power-driven, many of us, and feel that we deserve what is coming to us.

This generation that they are now calling Generation Me, is going to do great things.

These psychologists are saying that we are miserable. I don’t see too many miserable people, they don’t add to my cause, therefore, I can’t be around a Miserable Mary. Miserable people aren’t part of this so-called narcissistic and self-centered group of people. People who are narcissistic and self-centered like to make themselves happy because they are all about what makes them tick and work better.

From a young age, we were told by our parents to be better, to do better, and that better wasn’t enough, only the best was acceptable. How can we not like ourselves more than usual when we have accomplished so much?

We are the ones who will either give this country its final push into the pit of self-destruction or join strength and reinstate the morals on which this country was built.
