So here we all are running around getting life done.

We’ve got work to do, people to see, presents to wrap, cookies to bake, and all in a matter of weeks.

Yikes.

Every year it happens the same way: we piddle around for 11 and a half months, putting off the inevitable, pretending it won’t come, and then it does.

And then it’s the shocker of shockers: Christmas is here and, no, I’m not ready for it.

Even in this relatively small town, life seems to scream by faster and faster as we approach the ever-looming December 25.

In a panic, we grab our credit cards and go to work.

It’s easy to focus on the to-do list and forget what you’re doing it all for.

It’s not about what great presents you get.

It’s not whether your house has the coolest light display.

It’s not about how much you spend on others.

Charlie Brown cried out for someone who could tell him what Christmas was all about, and we probably need a reminder too.

This time of year, the holidays, Christmas is all about love.

Christmas is sitting with your family around a fire, laughing about years past.

Christmas is sneaking around keeping your surprises secret.

Christmas is going through the hassle of putting up a Christmas tree, knowing full well your cat will knock it down within the hour.

Christmas is loving and being loved.

So, yes, shop to your heart’s content.

Go to the early morning sales, bake the cookies, visit family and laugh with friends.

Just remember what this time means to you.

Resist the lure of obligation and remember that it’s all about love or it’s not worth doing.

There are times to be dutiful, but give yourself a rest.

Make the effort to live from your heart.
