Western student dies in car wreck

James R. Simmons, Western freshman, 19, was killed in a one-vehicle accident on Missouri Route DD early Saturday morning.

According to the Missouri State Highway Web site, he was traveling with Megan Cobbs, 16 of Savannah, Mo., when Simmons’ Trans Am lost control after making a pass and ran off the roadway, striking a tree. The car came to rest on its wheels. The Trans Am damage was totaled.

Exact time of accident was unknown at press time.

Simmons and Cobb were pronounced dead at 3:40 a.m. by Andrew County Coroner, Ron Crouse. Neither were wearing safety devices.

Both were taken to Breit and Hawkins Funeral Home in Savannah. Next of kin has been notified and the investigation is still going on.
