Soccer walks away from season by Dorothy Charles

Western’s budding soccer team lost its final game 3-0 to the University of Central Missouri ending their season with an overall record of one win, 15 losses and three ties.

Head Coach, Jeff Hansen says he is pleased with his team’s overall season. The team had less wins this year than last season but Hansen said his team has improved.

“People are going to look at wins and losses and think, ‘No. It wasn’t a better year,’ but you look at some of the statistics and the defense of things…it was definitely a more successful season than last year,” Hansen said.

The team is losing eight senior players. One player said the end of this season is a little bittersweet.

“Our season was just really rough this year, but I’m going to miss being a part of the team. That’s what I am going to miss the most about it, is just the teammates, just being together and everything,” Senior Goalie, Ashley Harrel said.

Hansen said he is going to recruit players for next year and will be looking in the Midwest area, but isn’t against looking elsewhere either.

“We always look for goal-orientated kids. You always look for the student-athlete in high schools; that they’ve got a successful GPA…from a position standpoint when we lose eight of them we’re kind of looking for all the above.”

Hansen hopes to have a roster of 24 or 25 players for next season.
