Homecoming 2006

This year Missouri Western State University organizations went all out adding on new activities and events for Homecoming week.

Stan Sweeney, homecoming advisor, said that it is important that everyone get involved during Homecoming week.

“Homecoming is an opportunity to bring the community into Missouri Western as well as students to celebrate our Griffon pride,” Sweeney said. “ It’s an opportunity for the whole
campus, including the alumni community, to really celebrate Griffon pride and pride in the institution.”

Homecoming began on Monday with events such as a sign decorating contest, an office decorating contest and Yell like Hell.

The signs from the decorating contest will be lined up around Downs Drive.

Sweeney said that these events were designed to get people excited about Homecoming week.

“It’s an opportunity to get people geared up about the week,” Sweeney said.

Tuesday’s activity is community service, which is also called Donation Creation. This will start in the Nelle Blum Student Union parking lot at 4:30 p.m., where student organizations sign up and create a sculpture out of can foods that recognize the Homecoming theme “Griffons to the Rescue.”

Beginning at 7:00 p.m. is the Campus Activities Board talent show in Leah Spratt 101.

Sweeney said that the talent show is one of the more popular events.

“It’s a great way for our students to showcase their talents that a lot of us don’t necessarily know about,” Sweeney said.

Wednesday is University Happy Hour in Nelle Blum lobby at 4:30 p.m. Groups will create non-alcoholic drinks that celebrates the theme. There will be an Speaker in Potter Hall Theatre at 7:00 p.m. Followed by voting for the homecoming king and queen at 8:00 p.m.

The king and queen will be chosen by majority vote of the student body, the homecoming elections will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 18 at 8:00 a.m. and will end on Thursday, Oct. 19
at 4:30 p.m. Only registered Missouri Western students will be able to vote on the homepage link. Students are only allowed to vote once.

Thursday is the CAB comedian show located in the Looney Complex at 7:00 p.m. Friday is the volleyball game: Western vs. UCM at 7:00 p.m. in the Looney Complex. After the game is the Bonfire/Pep Rally in the same location at 9:00 p.m.

During the pep rally there will be an introduction of the homecoming court and some representatives from the various athletics sports will speak with the student body.

Also, a Goofy Griff competition, where each organization will select a student from the crowd to get the crowd excited about homecoming events on Saturday. Immediately after that event the bonfire will be lit.

Saturday is the Homecoming parade, Campus Entry, Community Entry lineup starting on 36th street at 6:00-8:00 a.m.

The Homecoming parade begins at 12th and Faraon promptly at 9:30 a.m.

“All through the week of events we want everybody to come faculty/staff, community- whoever,” Sweeney said. “But obviously the parade is a big thing, every year.”

The Homecoming game will start at 2:00 p.m., coronation and final Homecoming scores are to be announced at halftime.
